Refugee/Asylum Seeker Programme

refugee-asylum-seeker-belfast

Few times a year we run a small number of training workshops in sewing machines and tools sections for local refugees, asylum seekers and other people marginalised in our society.

During this training, participants learn how to use various hand tools and gain new skills on refurbishing them for a project in East Africa. There is a mixed work environment, so people can see the work of other volunteers and take part in different areas of workshops as well. Tools For Solidarity provides vegetarian lunches and day bus tickets during the training days. As a present TFS gives to all participants a tools kit at the end of the training and a certificate that states they hard work with our organisation.

Last year we had 4 days of Tools Maintenance and Skills Training Course with 5 participants with different backgrounds. We are happy to share their experience with everyone.

Day 1

On the first day of the Tools Maintenance and Skills Training Course, we are meeting our participants. As you might know, our organisation has a huge history so we gave them general information about it. During the day they learn the basics of carpenter as well as trying to refurbish some tools. Our international volunteers are always happy to participate in this event and help trainees with every possible aspect.

Day 2

It is the second day of our course. Participants are getting to know all depths of TFS work and already have success with tools refurbishing. One of the main features of the programme is communication. Therefore, we are trying to build a friendly environment in the workshop. Tools For Solidarity is always happy to hear different stories from our trainees.

Day 3

On the third day of Tools Maintenance and Skills Training, our participants were sharpening chisels and making hammers. These are essentials of any refurbishing process and we are happy to be able to provide it. Each trainee was amazed by their own work especially those who have never done anything like this before!

Day 4

On the last day of training, our participants were finishing with tools they have been working on during the week. It was a hard time to say goodbye to each trainee. Because even though it was only a week they became a part of the organisation. However, we were happy to present to participants their certificates. Moreover, we gave each of them a kit of tools that they can use in their daily life!
