Our aims

Tools For Solidarity has three basic aims:

1. To provide people, communities and projects in sub Sahara Africa with basic hand tools and machines so that they may practice their skills and improve the quality of their own and their community’s life. The tools enable the people who receive them to establish small co-operative and community businesses as well as provide training in vocational schools and opportunities for employment for disabled and women’s groups.

2. To raise awareness throughout Northern Ireland (NI) about the issues of sustainable development within our own society as well as in the so called Third World or Majority world. These issues include the environment, waste and recycling, appropriate technology, self-reliance, sustainability and community development. We seek to improve and question what we do and work with others to challenge the wasteful, destructive and unequal growth pattern of our society and globe.

3. To provide opportunities for people in NI to participate in worthwhile and valuable work. TFS is particularly committed to working with all sections of the community in NI and to focus on providing sheltered placements for people with special needs and those normally excluded from being able to contribute to society in a positive way.

  1. Dear Team Leader at Tools for Solidarity

I am called Ponny Bukenya the Director and founder of Healthcare Volunteer Uganda-HVU. HVU is a registered non-profit organization located in the central part of Uganda. HVU’s vision is to create an environment where quality health care services are accessible for the entire community. HVU’s mission is to empower all individuals and groups to make an impact in the betterment of the community through Volunteering, Partnership Building, and Camping. HVU does not have a solid funding base only we depend on individual donations from Philanthropists the world over. All we do would never be possible without our volunteers.

We operate from the most hard to reach communities in Mubende District reaching out to the most impoverished and HIV/AIDs affected categories of population. We particularly target most at high risk adolescent girls and young women (10-24) years. We economically empower these vulnerable categories of population so as to reduce new incidences of HIV, because extreme poverty has been noted as the key driver to HIV new infections among the key population. As such, we put in place a small vocational and Apprenticeship training center where we provide practical skills in Bakery, tailoring, and hair dressing to the adolescent girls and young women who are pregnant and out of school. Currently our apprenticeship center has a total enrollment of 60 beneficiaries yet a good number of adolescents and you women would like to enroll. The courses are short term i.e. 06 months. After graduation, the beneficiaries are guided to save, manage income and also invest in various income generating activities. During the 06 months training, the beneficiaries undergo voluntary HIV testing. Those found HIV+ are linked to the health facilities for initiation on antiretroviral therapy treatment. Also there is integration of sexual reproductive health into the course so as to reduce on the un wanted teenage pregnancy and also to upscale utilization of those services (HIV and sexual reproduction)

After looking through your organization’s website, we are interested in working out a partnership with your organization in regard to promoting the project. We would greatly appreciate your positive response to this call and any support that you would be able to provide. If you would want to know more about us, please don’t hesitate to email us.

    Kind Regards,
    Ponny Bukenya
